Music therapy is an evidence based accredited profession delivered by a trained professional upon completion of a masters level degree. Music therapy plays a vital role in facilitating change within this population in areas such as social, emotional and physical and cognitive domains. In mental health settings the person centered approaches is paramount, where the service users needs and wishes are facilitated.
Music therapy is always carried out within a safe environment where emotions can be explored freely both within group and individual settings.
Music therapy for mental health facilitates social and emotional expression, aids physical functioning, incorporates fine and gross motor skills within sessions, providing a safe and supportive environment where self-expression, emotional exploration, engagement and self-identity can flourish and grow.
During music therapy sessions a sense of inclusion and achievement can be incorporated which can boost self-esteem and confidence. It is however important to remember that no previous musical skill or background is required for referral, but if present this will be explored , facilitated and incorporated within the sessions.
