In ageing, dementia and stroke care musical identity is often preserved enabling service users to express and communicate through music with the music therapist when other methods are often difficult or challenging. Musical improvisations within sessions help foster social, emotional and cognitive wellbeing for the individual or group members. It is however important to remember that no previous musical skill or background is required for referral, but if present this will be explored, facilitated and incorporated within the sessions.
Music therapy with older adults facilitates social and emotional expression, aids physical functioning, and incorporates fine and gross motor skills (through the playing of instruments). Within sessions, providing a safe and supportive environment where self-expression, emotional exploration, engagement and self-identity can flourish and grow.
Our approach is always person-centered and deeply empathetic. During your sessions, our qualified music therapist will gently guide you through activities like guided listening, rhythmic exercises, songwriting, or vocal expression – always tailored to your specific needs, comfort level, and abilities. No prior musical experience is ever required. Our goal is to create a safe, supportive environment where you can explore, express, and heal at your own pace.
To always look beyond the medical diagnosis of dementia or stroke and tap into the individual’s life story and to connect with the individual(s) or group members on a meaningful level always respecting their needs and wishes. We encourage families, friends, caregivers to intermittently be present for music therapy to create memories and moments and forge connections with their loved ones.
